Director for the Genesee County Office for the Aging, Ruth Spink spoke with WBTA this morning about propsed federal cuts to their meal programs funding.

Spink said, "First of all this is just a proposal so we don't want people to panic, however we do want to make sure that their voices are heard.  So we ask you to reach out to your senators, the federal senators and the congressman to let them know how vital this program is..."

Spink also provided further information following the interview.

She points out that it remains uncertain whether there are proposed cuts to the congregate meals program, which is another large component of the office's nutrition program.

Approximately 80% of their congregate meals program and 25% of home delivered meals program funding is provided federally.

Overall, nearly 53% of funds for the office's nutrition programs come from federal dollars.

Statement From Greg Olsen, Acting Director, NY State Office for the Aging Acting Director:

“New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) is currently doing an analysis on what, if any, impact there will be on NYS. We will provide that analysis when it is complete.

Funds that local Offices for the Aging receive from NYSOFA for home delivered meals (also known as meals on wheels) ARE NOT  slated for reductions.

What is chilling is the statement from the President’s Budget Director that home delivered meals do not work.

Last year – through Office for the Aging efforts, 64,460 older New Yorkers received registered dietitian (RD) certified home delivered meals, over 14 million meals.

Home Delivered Meal Clients in NYS:

·         42 % are age 85 or older

·         72% are age 75 or older

·         65% are female

·         61% live alone

·         39% are low income

·         33% have deficiencies in 3+ Activities of Daily Living {showers, toileting, personal hygiene, etc.}

·         86% have deficiencies in 3+ Instrumental Activities of Daily Living {transportation, shopping, laundry, etc.}

·         46% are at high nutrition risk

·         66% have 4+ chronic conditions

It is always important to talk to your Federal Representatives about the value of home delivered meals”
