Fire crews had a hard time just getting to the scene this afternoon after a car-carrier went up in flames near the Pembroke Thruway exit.
Traffic back-ups kept tankers and trucks from getting to the area immediately. That allowed the carrier to become fully engulfed in flames. The cars loaded onto the rig were also destroyed.
The car-carrier rig was first reported on fire around 2:30pm, in the westbound lane of the I-90. According to dispatcher reports, the fire appears to have begun in the cab and eventually spread to the whole rig.
As of this writing, the scene is now under control. The fire is out and clean-up efforts have begun. The truck is on the right shoulder of the highway and traffic will be diverted around it for the time being.
