24-year-old Melissa Englehardt of Elmira will serve 20 years in state prison for Manslaughter in the death of her 21-month-old Batavia stepson.
Chemung County Court Jdge Peter Buckley handed down the sentence this afternoon. Earlier this year, Buckley found Englehardt guilty of the Manslaughter of Andrew Cianfrini, but not Murder, as she was originally charged. The judge had apparently agreed with the defense that Englehardt did not intend to kill the boy when she fed him windshield washer fluid in his sippy cup. Englehardt's defense lawyer claimed she was only trying to make the boy sick.
Many from Batavia and Genesee County had written protest letters following the verdict, asking the judge to hand out the maximum sentence of 25 years after finding her not guilty of murder.
