Ron Burroughs of Batavia is Genesee County’s Health and Humanitarian of the Year.
He was presented the honor during a special luncheon yesterday.
Burroughs, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, was named the 2010 Health and Humanitarian by the Jerome Foundation and the United Memorial Medical Center Foundation.
Burroughs has long been active with Habitat for Humanity. He helps to rehabilitate homes for families who cannot afford to buy a house on their own.
Ron is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Batavia, and is directing the construction of a new addition there as well.
Work is wrapping up on the multi-million dollar expansion of United Memorial Medical Center.
This Monday, the contractor will be testing the hospital’s new sprinkler system. It uses so much water it could cause a discoloration of water in homes nearby the hospital.
The test will be conducted Monday morning.
If you live near the hospital, you may want to put off doing your laundry until the test is over.
An Elba woman has been arrested for alleged Welfare Fraud.
33-year-old Jamie Hamill of Lockport Road, Elba, is charged with Grand Larceny and Filing a False Instrument.
The case investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and Genesee County Social Services.
A reprieve for New York City's Off Track Betting Parlors which had been expected to close Friday. The OTB Board voted to keep its parlors open through Tuesday evening when the state senate will convene to vote on a rescue plan already approved by the assembly.
If the OTB does close some 800 workers stand to lose their jobs.
New York City’s OTB is separate and apart from Western Region OTB, headquartered here in Batavia.
The Batavia Police Department has created a new website to help track down some bad boys and girls that have outstanding warrants.
The police say the site will updated periodically. If you have information about any of the persons listed, you are asked to call Batavia Police. Do not attempt to apprehend these people yourself.
