The first full December weekend in Batavia normally means the Christmas in the City festival. But this year, there will be no Christmas in the City, after volunteer support became too sparse to support the event.
So instead, Batavia’s Mall Merchants Association is hosting “Christmas in the City Centre.” Mall Director Madeleine Bialkowski is the event coordinator.
"When I discovered that nothing was going to happen this year...I brought it back to the people I work for, and asked their permission," says Bilakowski. "They granted me permission to call vendors, to attempt to have some entertainment, and especially to get Santa in here for the children.
"Very late notice - also, zero operating budget - and we managed to pull it off!"
So, Friday night and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the Genesee Country Mall will host the Jackson School Handbell Choir, the St. Joseph’s School Choir, dancers from Center Stage Studio, and Mr. and Mrs. Clause, as well as a variety of craft vendors.
Bialkowski is quick to point out – this doesn’t replace Christmas in the City.
"We didn't want to see (Christmas in the City) totally end so abruptly this year," she says. "So we're just doing something in an interim. It's not a replacement and it's not a totally different thing; it's just something, until a more elaborate event can be planned in the future."
