In New York, Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Carl Paladino will face each other in a gubernatorial debate at Hofstra University this evening. But the five minor party candidates who will also take part could be the spoilers. They are the Green Party's Howie Hawkins; Libertarian Warren Redlich; Charles Barron of the Freedom Party; Jimmy McMillan, of the Rent Is 2 Damn High Party and former Eliot Spitzer madam Kristin Davis, of the Anti-Prohibition Party. She wants to legalize pot and prostitution to fix the state's budget woes.
Experts say the five lesser-known contenders will use the televised 90-minute debate to raise their profile. Cuomo, meanwhile, remains in the lead in the polls. A "New York Times" poll shows him ahead 59 points to Paladino's 24 points. Paladino's campaign has been marred by controversy including his recent comments on homosexuality and a fight with a "New York Post" reporter.
