Genesee County is apparently a great place to make food.
The County has been named the 2nd-best place in the nation for food production, awarded by Business Facilities magazine. Genesee shares the spot with neighboring Livingston County.
Sarah Kohl with the Genesee County Economic Development Center says an award like this can help to coax new businesses.
"It'll help give validation to the actual property and the resources," says Kohl. "Sometimes people are skeptical that something is 'too good to be true.' So you want to provide them with validation of the claims you're making about having fresh water and all the right production facilities."
Kohl says Livingston County has already benefited in the past from favorable rankings like this.
"Livingston County...brought in Barilla Pasta, with their meat production being so big," she explains. "It's just about finding the resources you have, that match with businesses that want to move."
The magazine notes that Genesee County has a wealth of field space and good production facilities, like the OATKA Milk factory here in Batavia.
