A Batavia woman is in critical condition this morning after reportedly swallowing an entire bottle of aspirin while an inmate at the Erie County Holding Center.
29-year-old Marcia Mitchel is under indictment for the May 2008 attempt to suffocate her infant daughter in a Buffalo hospital room.
She has been unable to post bail and has been held in the Erie County Jail since her arrest.
The holding center staff alerted The Buffalo News to Micthel’s suicide attempt.
The jail has been under the close scrutiny of the federal Justice Department for various deficiencies, including suicide prevention.
Jail staff was apparently aware that Mitchel was despondent and placed her on suicide watch. Somehow Mitchel managed to get a bottle of pills last Friday and take them without anyone noticing, until she became seriously ill.

But the survey continues to show Paterson's job approval mark significantly trails state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
The poll finds Cuomo has a 64-percent approval rating and would easily defeat Paterson and any potential Republican challenger this year.
