LeRoy Police are warning residents today about a mail scam.
A few LeRoy residents have received letters claiming they’ve won the lottery, or the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.
The mail comes with a check for thousands of dollars.
The letter urges the unsuspecting “winner” to cash it and then send some money back, promising they’ll be receiving more money very soon.
The checks look real; some banks even cash them.
But a few weeks later, the checks come back – fraudulent.
LeRoy Police Detective John Condidorio says at least one person has been stung so far for $2,400..
Condidorio advises, if you receive such a mailing, and aren’t sure whether it’s a scam, call LeRoy Police before taking it to the bank.
