The City of Batavia will have a new fire chief on Monday.
James Maxwell of Greece has been hired to take over the City Fire Department.
Maxwell has a combined 83 years of experience with 3 different fire departments in Monroe County - over 30 years each with North Greece and Lakeshore fire departments, including one year as fire chief in North Greece. In addition, Maxwell served 23 years with the Kodak Fire Department at the Eastman Kodak Company, serving as Haz-Mat Tech, Emergency Medical Technician, Lieutenant, and Battalion Chief.
For the past four years, Maxwell has worked for the Monroe County Health Department.
City Manager Jason Molino says it was more than the resume that won the job for Maxwell:
"Whenever we make a hiring decision, there's several characteristics we look for: integrity, enthusiasm and character," said Molino. "Jim seems to be a well-established leader. We'll work through any adjustments, and I think in the end we're going to have a good the community."
City Council tonight approved a resolution to temporarily waive the Genesee County residency requirement normally associated with the city fire chief. Maxwell has one year to move into the county.
Maxwell’s starting salary is $75,170. He takes over for Acting Chief Craig Williams, who served for the past 3 months.
