Motorists on R. Stephen Hawley Drive in the Town of Batavia will soon have to slow down.
The Town Board yesterday approved a resolution to reduce speed limits on the stretch also known as College Road. Currently, the limits are 55 miles per hour between Bank Street Road and the GCC property line, 55 on the big hill, and 45 miles per hour passing the GCC campus. The new limits would reduce the 55 mile per hour sections to just 40, and the section near GCC would drop to 30 miles per hour.
Town Supervisor Greg Post says it’s in the interest of nursing students who will be walking to the new Med-Tech Center across the street.
"We're trying to be more safety-oriented," said Post. "As a result of our traffic engineering studies, we support most of these reductions."
The speed limit reductions were requested by GCC. They will now go to the DOT and the County Highway Department for approval.
