A large crowd was on hand yesterday for the dedication of the new Genesee County War Memorial located just north of the UMMC Jerome Center. The memorial was erected to replace the one that was formally outside Genesee Memorial Hospital, now known as UMMC. Names of all the Genesee County soldiers, killed or missing in action, from the 20th century wars are listed on a very special and rare kind of black granite. At the dedication ceremony all the names of the soldiers on the memorial were read, those killed or missing in World War One and Two, Korea, and Vietnam.
The cool weather that we have experienced for the past two days will continue today. Yesterday, temperatures in the area reached only the 54 degree mark with a low of 41. Today there will be intervals of clouds and sunshine. The temperature should crack the 60 degree mark with a high of 61.
It’s graduation day at Genesee Community College. The 46th commencement exercises begin at 1 PM at the Anthony t. Zambito Gym. It is Victoria Day week-end in Canada when Canadians celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria who ruled over Canada and England from 1837 to 1901. Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, but just like many American Holidays, the day is set for a Monday making a three day week-end. Motorists heading to or from Canada should be alert for increased traffic at the bridge and border crossings on the Niagara Frontier.
36 year old Klarissa Price of West Main Street Road in Batavia has been charged by Batavia Police with endangering the welfare of a child less than 17 years of age. Police say Price intentionally left her 11 year old daughter without any parental supervision at a west main street location. Price has been issued an appearance ticket.
A domestic dispute has led to the arrest of 29 year old Bobby Mobley Junior of Watson Street in Batavia on a charge of harassment. Batavia Police say Mobley allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend in the face. He has been issued an appearance ticket.
A New York City man is redefining the meaning of the word "priceless." Anton Purisima has filed a lawsuit against the city of New York, its Transit Authority, two hospitals and several other companies and individuals for injuries, civil rights violations and even attempted murder. The federal lawsuit claims his injuries, pain and suffering are priceless, but he is asking for two undecillion  un-deh-SILL-yun  dollars in damages. The number represents a two, followed by 36 zeroes -- or, more simply, more money than there is on Earth.
An accident on Liberty Street last February 19 has led to DWAI charges involving drugs. 36 yaer old Courtney Gaebler of Soccio Street in Batavia drove off Liberty Street and hit a utility pole. Police say Gaebler was previously observed driving erratically by witnesses prior to the accident.
23 year old Aaron Sechrist of Jackson Street in Batavia has been charged with Petit Larceny. He was arrested for allegedly stealing 26 dollars worth of merchandise from Wal-Mart.
21 year old Ajia Hasenauer of Main Street in LeRoy has been charged with violation of parole and a slew of traffic and motor vehicle charges. Hasenauer was stopped in LeRoy for the various traffic offenses and was found to be in violation of a probation warrant from Genesee County Court.
