Tomorrow is the deadline for New York state residents to register assault rifles that were legally purchased before they were banned by the SAFE Act.

The deadline is part of the law that classified some semi-automatic assault rifles as assault weapons.

You do have the option to avoid registering the gun by modifying it. For example, you could remove the bayonet lug, grind off the threads of the barrel, remove the foregrip so that it cannot be readily reattached, as long as it’s a permanent change.

Those who do not register the weapon by the deadline could face a class A misdemeanor and forfeiture. A 30-day amnesty period will be extended to register it if failure to register is deemed unintentional.

There is no cost to register and hard copy forms are available at State Police or it can be done online.
