Genesee County leads the tri-county area in donations to Catholic Charities as Appeal Week continues.
The Buffalo Diocese has collected almost $8 million of its $10.8 million goal. A big surge comes with Appeal Week which continues through this weekend.
Genesee County parishes have donated more than $186,000 to the campaign.
Bishop Richard Malone said that in its 90th campaign year, more Western New Yorkers are in need of the services from Catholic Charities.
“Now we’re serving 138,000 people through all the counties of Western New York,” he said. “The need has grown and thanks to the generosity of the great people of Western New York, the response has grown as well.”
Sister Mary McCarrick, diocesan director of Catholic Charities, says it’s pleasing to see people who were previously assisted by Catholic Charities donate themselves.
“That’s a special joy to me to hear someone tell the story, ‘I was adopted through Catholic Charities and my child was adopted through Catholic Charities,’ or, ‘In a rough patch when we were children we received assistance from Catholic Charities,’ or, ‘I got out of an abusive relationship with the support of Catholic Charities.’ Those individual stories are particularly touching and gratifying for me,” she said.
