Yesterday was the first day in the last 10 to be precipitation free as no rain or snow was recorded. The high in Batavia yesterday was 39 and the low 33 for an average of 36 degrees. Flurries are in the forecast for this morning; otherwise it will be breezy with some sunshine. The high today is expected to be 34 degrees.
A problem with a National Grid transformer across the street from Wal-Mart on Veterans Drive led to a power outage yesterday afternoon at the store. Law enforcement officials were called to the scene after a customer refused to leave the store. Wal-Mart officials were in the process of evacuating the business. Town of Batavia Fire crews were on the scene, but no fire was reported.
Batavia Police are investigating the reported disappearance of a silver chalice from St. James church on East Main Street in Batavia. It’s believed the chalice, considered an important part of the congregation was stolen sometime during this past week. There was no evidence of a break-in at the church. The silver chalice is used for the consecrated wine and is administered at the Eucharist. Church members are asking for help in getting the chalice returned.
Batavia fire fighters were called to the report of a fire in an apartment at Walden Estates located on Bank Street last evening. The fire was confined to the living room with extensive heat and smoke damage to the entire two story apartment. There were no injures. No one was home at the time of the blaze. The fire was reported by a neighbor who heard the smoke detectors sounding.
32 year old Christian Santana of Kelly Street in Rochester has been charged with Petit Larceny, Possession of Burglar tools and second degree Harassment. Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies say Santana allegedly stole nearly 130 dollars in merchandise from K-mart on Lewiston Road in Batavia. The other charges came from his use of a cutting instrument that was used to aid the theft of the merchandise and its alleged that Kelly pushed a loss prevention official where they attempt to detain him. He’s in jail this morning on 500 dollars cash bail or a thousand dollars bond.
55 year old Sharon Chase of route 19 in LeRoy has been charged with third degree Grand Larceny. She allegedly stole several items from the apartment of an acquaintance.
The mayor of Lockport has stepped down from office. Mike Tucker says his decision to resign has nothing to do with allegations of a city employee misusing credit cards.
He says he's entertaining offers from private sector companies and is also ready to focus on his family.
Tucker's been the Mayor of Lockport for ten years.
