A bizarre pair of accidents involving the same driver last night, sending one man to the hospital and knocking out power for hundreds.
County Sheriff’s Deputies report that 64-year-old Charles Colf of Stafford was driving Southwest on East Bethany-LeRoy Road in the Town of LeRoy. He apparently drove off the right-hand shoulder and straight into a ditch. Colf’s car sustained heavy front-end damage. But he turned his car around, and began to drive back in the other direction. About a mile later, Colf drove off the right-hand shoulder again, this time striking a utility pole. That pole fell into another one, knocking it over as well.
Deputies found Colf incoherent at the scene. He suffered internal injuries and was transported to UMMC. He is charged with speeding.
The knocked-over poles reportedly knocked-out power for over 600 in the Bethany and East Bethany area last night. That number was down to 210 by this morning. National Grid workers reportedly restored power for those customers at about 10:30am.
