Today is the first day new restrictions on ammunition sales take effect across the state.
The new regulations require sellers to register with state police, and require buyers to purchase ammunition in person.
The changes are part of New York’s gun control law, the SAFE Act, that was passed in the wake of the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school.
State Police Commissioner Joseph D’Amico says the law will also require retail sellers to do background checks and record sales once the database is established. It is not operational yet.
