A Corfu man has been killed in a two vehicle accident on the Two Rod Road in the Town of Alden. The accident happened yesterday morning about 11:30AM when the Corfu man’s car failed to negotiate a curve in the road, crossed over the center line and struck an SUV head on. The driver of the SUV has been identified as 46 year old Lisa Kluck of West Seneca. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The identity of the Corfu man has not been released. The Erie County Sheriff’s Department is continuing their investigation.
The stretch of non-freezing weather will continue today, but it won’t last much longer. Yesterday most of the snow melted as temperatures reached the 40 degree mark, with a low just 35 degrees. But that soon is going to change as a cold front will be moving through.
Today it will be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain this afternoon and a high of 42, but then tonight there will be a rapid freeze up with temperatures dipping to 14 degrees overnight. Tonight it will be cloudy and breezy with a chance of snow showers. On Monday snow will accumulate up to an inch early in the day with a high of just 17.
Firefighters from East Pembroke, Corfu, and the Town of Batavia responded to a house fire at 3065 Pearl Street Road in the Town of Pembroke. Flames were reported on the side of the house from an electrical wire. No injuries were reported. National Grid was called to the scene. The fire broke out shortly before midnight last night and fire crews left the scene about 1:30 this morning.
Batavia City Firefighters were called out to a residence on Bogue Avenue early this morning. The report was a garage fire and flames were out quickly.
If you are working in New York State and make the minimum wage of seven dollars and 25 cents an hour…you’ll be getting a raise this Wednesday, with the start of the New Year. New York is one of 13 states that will be raising their minimum wage. New York’s new minimum wage will be eight dollars and hour. The increase is expected to benefit about 293 thousand works in the state. The biggest minimum wage will now be in the state of Washington with the minimum per hourly wage of $9.23.
Beginning Wednesday with the start of the New Year, Americans are going to notice a change in the selection of light bulbs they can buy at the hardware store. Some shoppers are looking to get their hands on what will be left of incandescent light bulbs. The start of the new year will mark the end of production for 60 and 40 watt incandescent bulbs. The 100 watt and 75 watt were already phased out the last couple years because they don't meet new standards that require all new screw in light bulbs to use 25 percent less power by 2014.Studies find that energy efficient lights use less heat and save on their bills.
