Many City of Batavia residents probably observed a bright explosion and over 800 residents lost power late last night.
Preliminary emergency response reports indicated it was a broken transformer , but National Grid spokesperson Steve Brady says it was a wire down at 104 Pearl Street.
He says National Grid breakers work the same way ones in homes do.
“When one of our breakers open, for whatever reason, it can throw a fairly impressive arc, especially if it’s dark out,” Brady said. “They’re perfectly safe and they’re perfectly fine. Oftentimes we’ll get reports of fires or explosions that aren’t actually fires or explosions; what they were is the arc when the breaker opens.”
Power was restored at about 1 a.m.
