A burglary at Rent-a-Center results in the arrest of Batavia man in string of Genesee County robberies last week.
City of Batavia Police and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest this morning of 43-year-old Mark Maltese of Dellinger Avenue for the robberies at Best Western and Days Inn in Batavia and 7-Eleven in Oakfield last week. Also arrested was 52-year-old Robert Grant of Angling Road, Pembroke. Both are accused of breaking into Rent-A-Center early this morning. Grant, at this time, is not a suspect in the robberies last week.
A witness observed the Rent-a-Center burglary and called police, providing a detailed description. The two suspects then left the store and joined a birthday party in progress on Colonial Boulevard.
Police said items recovered through the investigation tied Maltese to the robberies.
The investigation in ongoing. At his arraignment today, Maltese said he used the money to feed his "out of control" crack cocaine addiction. He said he used all $550 he got away with to purchase and immediately smoke the crack after each robbery.
