A Brockport man is hospitalized and facing charges after he flipped his car and tried to flee the scene of the accident.

Orleans County Sheriff’s deputies say 34-year-old Erich Baase was driving a 2001 Jeep SUV westbound on Route 31 in the Town of Murray at 11 yesterday morning when he failed to negotiate a turn.

The vehicle overturned and came a rest upside down in a drainage ditch.

Deputies say Baase fled from the wreckage to avoid the arrival of police and emergency responders. A State Police helicopter was even employed in the 45-minute hunt before Baase surrendered.

He is charged with Operating a Vehicle Without an Ignition Interlock Device and Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting. Additional charges are pending a blood test.
Baase was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with a head injury.
