In Buffalo, Mayor Byron Brown has been re-elected mayor. He easily defeated Republican Sergio Rodriguez. In an Erie County wide race Republican Timothy Howard defeated Richard Dobson for Sheriff.
There will be a new mayor in Rochester. City council president Lovey Warren was elected Mayor defeating incumbent Thomas Richards who lost in the primary and didn’t campaign. Despite that he still garnered 40 percent of the vote.
In New York City Bill de Blasio is the new mayor.
Las Vegas-style casinos are coming to New York. Voters passed proposition one which calls for 7 casinos in New York State. In a statement, Governor Andrew Cuomo said the passage of Proposition One would be a big win for local taxpayers as well as school districts.
Starting next Fall, there will be an additional 64 dorm spaces for students at Genesee Community College. Ground breaking ceremonies were held yesterday for the construction of two new residence halls at College Village. This will bring now allow 450 students to live on campus.
Congressman Brian Higgins is celebrating the Federal Aviation Administration's release of strong new pilot training requirements. Higgins and others have pushed for the new rules following the crash of Colgan Flight 3407, which went down near Buffalo Niagara International Airport in February of 2009. The plane crashed because the pilot had never been properly trained to handle the airplane's stall recovery equipment. The strict new rules will be implemented by 2019.
