New York State Legislature has passed a bill increasing the state cigarette tax to $4.35 a pack – now the highest in the nation.
The new legislation also allows the state to collect taxes on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations.
State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer says the measure regarding reservation sales is nothing new – but the state has not been able to collect on that tax for years.
Ranzenhofer says he voted no on the bill, which was included in the governor’s latest emergency spending measure.
Representatives from the nearby Tonawanda Indian reservation declined comment today. Both the ArrowHawk Smoke Shop and the Totem Pole Smoke & Gas say they don’t yet know enough about the bill to speak about it.
