The state Legislature passes a bill to keep state government running, but at the expense of smokers.
State lawmakers have approved an increase in the cigarette tax of $1.60 per pack. The increase brings the total tax on a pack of smokes to $4.35 a pack – the highest in the nation.
The average price for cigarettes in New York City, which has its own $1.50 tax on top of the state tax, is nearly eleven-dollars a pack.
A federal judge has thrown the book at a Salamanca man who admitted to creating home made child porn videos.
38-year-old Shawn Snyder was handed 75-years in federal prison, one of the harshest punishments for child porn in Western New York.
Police said Snyder victims four girls and one boy - ranged in age from five to eight-years-old.
Defense attorneys unsuccessfully argued that Snyder was mentally handicapped with an IQ of 73.
The United Way is getting some help from a bank, a lot of help.
Employees at Five Star Bank branches throughout Western New York have raised 100-thousand dollars in support of the United Way.
The money will be shared among the United Ways throughout the region. Wyoming County, where Five_star is headquartered, will received $45,000 while Genesee County, which has only one bank branch, will receive $3,000.
Four Amish teenagers have been arrested in Chautauqua County and charged with driving a horse drawn buggy while drinking.
Sheriff's deputies say two of the teenagers were riding on the roof of the buggy while two more were inside. Deputies said all four had alcohol and
were charged with underage possession
