New York State says the Genesee County Jail is understaffed and needs 10 more corrections officers.
The State Commission on Corrections uses a formula to determine staffing. It’s estimated the 10 new positions will cost the county almost $1 million a year.
If the county refused to comply with the regulations, the commission has the power to make the county close portions of the jail and reduce the number of inmates, would mean more transportation costs.
The alternative would be building a new, two-story $31 million jail, which has been in discussion.
