There has been a major development in the 2005 murder of Oakfield’s Bill Fickel.
A person of interest in the case has been identified.
He is 45-year-old Steven Rebert, most recently from Emporium, Pennsylvania.
He is facing charges of murder for the shooting deaths of a Jefferson County, Pennsylvania couple in April of this year.
Rebert, up until a year ago, lived on East Shelby Road in Oakfield, less than a mile from Fickel’s home.
Rebert has also been linked to the 2007 murder of 47-year-old Kevin Smith in the Orleans County town of Shelby – also near Rebert's former residence.
This morning WBTA News spoke with Chief Deputy Jerome Brewster of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Brewster has been the lead investigator on the Fickel case.
We began by asking why Rebert is a "person of interest:"

Authorities in Orleans County have declined further comment on Steven Rebert other than to term him a “person of interest” in the Kevin Smith killing.
Lisa Fickel, Bill Fickel’s widow, told WBTA today she was taken back by the arrest of Rebert. She said that although he was a neighbor, neither she nor her late husband knew Rebert very well.
