New York is taking killing a police animal seriously. Governor Andrew Cuomo approved legislation today that would make it a felony.

Specially-trained animals, especially dogs and horses, are often put in harm’s way and are depended upon by law enforcement to keep residents safe.

Cuomo calls it a “tragedy” when one is killed. He says the new law will “offer better protections for these highly-trained animals who are important members of our law enforcement community.”

The law will be upgraded from a class A misdemeanor to a class E felony.
