First-time claims for unemployment benefits have fallen to their lowest level in more than two months.
Weekly figures from the Labor Department this morning show that 334,000 people filed claims last week. That's down 24,000 from the week before and the lowest since early May.
New York had one of the sharpest increases in first-time claims, along with Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Ohio.
The biggest declines in claims were in New Jersey, California, Texas, North Carolina, and Washington state.
New York's unemployment rate announced this afternoon for May and Jue is 7.5 percent -- lower than the national rate of 7.6 percent and the lowst rate since February 2009.
