UPDATE: 4:28p.m. The active manhunt for a burglary suspect in the vicinity of State St. has been suspended.

Police are conducting a search on the ground and in the air for a suspect in a burglary this afternoon at 142 State St.

Batavia City Police, State Police and Genesee County Sheriff's Deputies were looking for a man described as a white male, 5ft. 8in to 5ft 10in tall, wearing jeans, a dark shirt, and gray gloves.

The victim, who lives upstairs and identified herself only as "Angela," encountered the suspected theif when she returned home.

She spoke with WBTA's Geoff Redick:

Angela theorized that perhaps she knows the theif because when she left her apartment, her curtains were opened. Upon her return this afternoon, when she encountered the suspect, the curtains were drawn. "Maybe he (the suspect) didn't want me to see him," she said.

The New York State Police helicopter was also utilized in the search.

Police supervised the dismissal of students at Batavia Middle School as a precaution until the area was searched.
