There are 2,265 school days from kindergarten through 12th grade. Pembroke’s Anthony Platek was present and on time for every single one of them.
“I guess you could say it kind of happened," he said to Howard Owns of our news partner, The Batavian. "I just showed up and did my thing. I was an average student, really, but when I found out about this, I knew I had another goal to work toward.”
Anthony says he’s enjoyed reflecting on his accomplishment.
“I’ve looked back on it. I’ve had to do projects and stuff where I’ve had to build resumes and portfolios and on my resume it says perfect attendance 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,"I look back on it and go, ‘Wow. The whole time…’ You don’t even notice it. It just stacks up over the years.”
Vice principal Nathan Work says students get perfect attendance for a single grade fairly frequently, and even though Anthony’s not the first, he says having perfect attendance K through 8 is a huge accomplishment.
“I think it comes down to character," Work said. "He’s extremely dedicated. His mom shared a story with me about times he was sick and had headaches and the nurse was encouraging him to go home. He wouldn’t go home and he wanted to stay in school. His mom brought him in some medicine and he toughed it out.”
