Buffalo Assemblyman Sean Ryan is calling for a state investigation into tax breaks given by Genesee County for a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Batavia. Assemblyman Ryan says the investigation is needed to determine whether the tax credits violate new statewide restrictions on incentives for retail projects. The Genesee County Economic Development Center recently approved close to two-million dollars in tax breaks for Dick's to move into the space left vacant by a Lowe's store that closed two years ago.
Genesee Community College last night presented their annual financial request to the County legislature. GCC is asking for one hundred thousand dollars more next year, bringing the county’s share to just about two million dollars. According to GCC President Jim Sunser there will be about a 150 dollar per year tuition increase next year. Sunser also says because of the addition of the yogurt plants coming to the area; some new programs are being added. Enrollment at GCC was down about 2 percent, much less than the 5 to 8 percent at other community colleges. President Sunser believe enrollment will be up next year.
GCC will hold its graduation ceremonies this Sunday. State Senator Catherine Young, a Republican from Olean will address the 900 graduates during the 1PM ceremony on Sunday.
A proposal from the Obama administration to study fees for crossing the U.S. land borders is now dead. A congressional committee has approved an amendment to block the Department of Homeland Security from studying the concept. The amendment was proposed by Buffalo Congressman Brian Higgins, who says such a fee would be a hardship on people who cross the border regularly. He also says the money for the study would take resources from other critical needs.
An Alabama man has been charged with DWI and four other vehicle and traffic charges after a one car accident on route 77 in the town of Alabama yesterday morning. 20 year old Joseph Clark of Reuben Road in Alabama was driving his car when it crashed and burst into flames.
Three men have been arrested in connection with a home invasion last week-end in Springwater, in Livingston County. The three are identified a 21 year old Kyle Witthoft of Gang Mills, near Corning and 36 year old Alan Fick and 23 year old Joseph Macuado both of Westside Drive in Rochester. They allegedly entered the home and held a gun to the 70 year old resident and tying him up. The victim of the attack was able to free himself before going to a neighbor’s house and calling police. The trio is accused to stealing a number of items including a Dodge Dakota pick-up truck which is believed to have been driven into the canal.
A Warsaw woman has been charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child after she left three children 7 years of age and under in a running car. Deanna Lanni left the children in the car in order to go shopping at Tops in Warsaw. She was given an appearance ticket for Warsaw Town Court.
