For at least 10 of the Batavia Rotary Club Baseball Tournament’s 15 years of history, Oakfield-Alabama, Notre Dame, Attica and Batavia have come together for high-quality baseball in a strong community setting.
What makes the Tournament something to look forward to is that it’s not often that these four teams get together to compete.
“It’s always a lot of fun to play in the tournament,” senior Zach Hale said, “especially for Batavia, because we don’t get to play these three times any other time of the year; so it really means a lot to us. Starting from the first day of practice all the way to the last, there’s always a lot of hype around this tournament and how much it means to everyone.”
The Fighting Irish and Hornets will kick things off at 11:30 in the morning at Dwyer Stadium in the first round. Notre Dame head coach Mike Rapone says he’s looking forward to a challenging first-round matchup with the Hornets.
“Oakfield’s had our number for a long time in this tournament,” Rapone said. “I think the last time we played in the finals I had hair, so that was a long time ago.”
New Attica coach Rob Cusmano says his predecessor Denny Leyden encouraged the program to stay in the tournament for its many benefits.
“When I took over for Denny he said, ‘Whatever you do, stay in the Rotary Tournament.’" Cusmano said. "It’s an outstanding tournament. Great teams are in it and it gets you ready for sectionals.”
WBTA will have live play-by-play coverage of the consolation and championship games starting at 4:30.
Oakfield-Alabama co-head coach James Patric and Rapone agree it’s a great event for the entire community.
“We truly get to show this community how hard our teams, our players work to get to this point,” Patric said, “and it’s a great thing for the young kids to come out and see.”
“This baseball tournament is a great showcase,” Rapone said, “for the area athletes to get a chance to go out and perform in a great environment against great competition.”
Batavia is playing for its 5th-straight title.
