Matt Landers, the current deputy county treasurer, has been appointed as the City of Batavia Republican Committee Chairman.
He replaces Joe Gerace who announced he was stepping down from the position Feb. 13 after 15 years at the helm of the City’s GOP organization.
“I am equally excited," Landers said, "but I’ll admit I’m a little bit nervous because I have big shoes to fill. Hopefully I’ll be up for the challenge.”
Landers has been the treasurer for the City Committee the last seven years as well as serving as the County Republican Committee treasurer the last six years. He describes what he thinks he brings to the position.
“One thing I like to do a little bit differently – Joe was all heart and he was the backbone of this committee – I’d like to bring a little more organization and structure to the committee," he said. "I’d like to rebuild the committee a little bit with some younger individuals. Myself being a little bit more on the younger end compared to some other committee members, I’d like to rebuild some of the youth in the committee and get a little more excitement into the committee.”
Jim Russell was the acting chair before Landers was named earlier this week. Landers says he was to be easily-accessible and offered his personal email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) for any new members who want to get involved in local politics with the Republican party.
Overall, though, Landers says his focus is on the upcoming election in which three at-large positions are opening up.
