Batavia City Council holds a public hearing tonight into the proposed city budget.
That budget and a proposed amendment to the City Code will institute a Pay-as-you Throw trash collection system for Batavia.
The plan would take the cost of trash collection out of the tax levy and shift those costs to an annual user fee.
The plan also calls for trash to be picked up by a private firm.
The low bidder for the job was a private company headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.
The awarding of that contract ends the city’s 28 year relationship with the Genesee ARC for trash collection and recycling services.
Supporters of the ARC and the developmentally disabled workers that would lose their jobs are planning a rally outside of City Hall for 6:15 tonight.
The City Council meeting and the public hearing is scheduled to begin at 7.
