New York will have one of toughest gun control laws in the nation. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the NY SAFE Bill into law Tuesday evening.
Cuomo calls the law "common sense." The New York State Assembly passed the legislation Tuesday afternoon by a vote of 104-43. The state Senate passed the legislation Monday night.
The legislation, the first in the nation since the Newtown massacre last month, would expand the state's existing ban on assault weapons, limit the size of ammunition magazines, place further restrictions on gun sales, and create safeguards to make it more difficult for the mentally ill to own firearms.
