The City of Batavia announced over the weekend you can now make payments to the city with debit or credit cards, but a service fee will be tacked on.
Several of you called to question the practice, since private merchants are prohibited from adding the credit card fee onto a customer’s bill.
Batavia City Clerk Heidi Parker explained today that municipal governments couldn’t absorb the credit card fees because that would, in essence, be discounting fees set by legislation.
Parker said credit card companies make an exception for municipal governments.
If you pay your taxes, water and sewer bills, hunting and fishing licenses – even marriage licenses – by credit or debit card, expect to pay a service fee.
The fees can range from 3-dollars up to 2 and a half percent of the total transaction.
Parker said the entire service fee stays with the credit card company.
The city makes nothing nor looses anything on a credit or debit card transaction.
