An Orleans County man was arrested on a violent felony warrant for assault on a police officer.

Charles Sheets, 49, is facing charges for an incident Dec. 28 in which Sheriff’s Deputies were called to his home in the Town of Barre for a physical domestic dispute. When Deputies attempted to take Sheets into custody, he became combative and injured Deputy J.J. Cole.

Sheets went to the hospital with complaints of chest pain after the incident and was released five days later, without notification to the Sheriff’s Office’s of his pending release.

Sheets was found in a hotel in Avon and committed to Orleans County Jail without bail yesterday. An order of protection was issued for his wife. In addition to the outstanding warrant for felony second-degree assault, Sheets is also charged with harassment, menacing, reckless endangerment of property, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 17.

Deputy Cole was treated and released from MedinaMemorialHospital and is recovering at home.
