The 2012 homicide total in Buffalo is 40 percent higher than in 2011.
There were 50 homicides during 2012, and police say the vast majority of them were either related to drug dealing or to disputes among neighborhood gangs.
However, there were some victims who were innocent bystanders who were in the wrong place at the wrong time and were killed. There were also some domestic violence killings, with the most notorious being the brutal murder of a 10-year-old boy by his stepfather in April.
