A Medina man is dead after being struck by multiple vehicles in the Town of Shelby.
Joseph Tillinghast, 47, was walking in the eastbound lane on Route 31 between Hoffman Road and the Niagara-Orleans County Line at 5:45 Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car driven by George Gillespie, 54, of Lockport.
Tillinghast was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orleans County coroner.
The Orleans County Sheriff’s office says that after being struck by Gillespie, Tillinghast was struck by three more vehicles as he was lying in the roadway. All four of the cars were traveling east.
The pre-dawn incident occurred in an area with no artificial lighting and the posted limit is 55. The Sheriff’s Office says there does not appear to be any culpability on the part of the drivers at this time. Deputies say all four cars stopped and waited for law enforcement.
Neither alcohol nor excessive speed are factors.
