New York State is cracking down on unlicensed lawyers.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation that will make the unlicensed practice of law a class E felony. The offense is currently a misdemeanor.
"We have no tolerance for scam artists who pose as lawyers and deceive New Yorkers in need of legal help," the governor said in a statement. The new law takes effect on November 1, 2013.
