St. Anthony’s Church in Batavia is officially closing its doors after more 100 years. The final mass will take place Sunday, Dec. 30.
St. Anthony’s and Sacred Heart merged in 2008 to form Ascension Parish. The consolidation will save money and allow the parish to put its funds toward ministry, not costly maintenance.
“It will reduce the operation expenses of the parish," Diocese of Buffalo spokesperson Kevin Keenan said. "They will be able to focus more of their ministries and there will be more plans that will be put in place once that consolidation takes place to work on youth ministry and a number of other ministries.”
It will be business-as-usual for the parish until the end of the calendar year. Keenan says Bishop Richard Malone will come to Batavia to celebrate a closing mass on Jan. 13.
The move was speculated for some time, as the parish struggled to financially suport two locations even after the merger.
