Is the awful stench that has plagued the Attica community for months back?

The State Department of Environment Conservation – which is overseeing the progress made by the federal Environmental Protection Agency – says it has received complaints that it is.

Officials say there is no evidence of anything smoldering or burning within the recycling pile at Hillcrest Industries. Instead, it says the smell is being caused by an increase in the rate burnt plastic and paper are separated from recycled glass. The DEC is taking action to make sure it is cleaned up.

In October, the EPA extinguished a fire within the pile at Hillcrest and dismantled it into small parts, allowing the smell to vanish briefly.
