The federal Environmental Protection Agency has released an update on the fire extinguishing at Hillcrest Industries in Attica.
It says that since work began Sept. 29 about half of the entire pile has been moved and cooled. The work is progressing toward the hottest part of the pile with materials being handled today at almost 600-degrees.
The EPA says there continues to be occasional pockets of open flame, which are quickly extinguished.
It says smoke and fumes remain under control, odor remains a nuisance and there is visible steam from the piles. Results of real time monitoring show levels of volatile organic compounds show that levels are mostly not detectable or are very low.
