The bill signed by Governor Cuomo is intended to boost the number of registered organ donors in New York.
Lauren’s Law will require driver's license applicants over the age of 18 to answer whether they would like to join the state’s donor list. Currently, the question is optional.
The new law is named in honor of 12-year-old Lauren Shields who survived a heart transplant in 2009.
Just 18 percent in New YorkState are organ donors, compared to 43 percent of people nationally.
Lauren’s Law will take effect in one year.
