Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputies have confirmed that a body has been discovered in the Municipal Building in Castile that was destroyed by fire Tuesday.
The body has not been indentified, but it is believed to be Lorraine Qutermous, who has been unaccounted for since the fire broke out. Qutermous lived in the building above the restaurant she owned, Lorriane’s Place, which was on the first floor of the building at 55 Main Street.
The body was discovered in the basement and is believed to have fallen through the floorboards.
The fire destroyed the century-old building yesterday morning along with many of the community’s historical records.
Castile remains in a state of emergency because the municipal building was also the home of town and village offices and a courthouse.
Officials say the firehouse will serve as a court house and the Bank of Castile has made office space for village and town workers at no cost.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation by the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office. The Town and Village of Castile are still under a State of Emergency.
The building has been partly demolished, making it safe to resume traffic on Route 39 and to restore power that was lost in the immediate area.
Full demolition will be completed following the investigation.
