Genesee County is enacting new tax.
Starting October 1st, all new vehicle registrations will require a $5 fee for passenger cars and a $10 fee for commercial vehicles.
Genesee County is the last county in Western New York to adopt the tax. County Clerk Don Read says that the motivation is to help relieve the tax burden on some residents.
“It is one way to spread the tax, perhaps, over more of a use-tax nature, rather than have all of the property tax owners responsible for various county operations," Read said.
The County expects to raise close to $300,000 in funds from the tax.
On December 1st, all – not just new -- vehicle registrations in Genesee County will require a fee.
Exemptions from the tax include vehicles used for non-profit organizations or for farm purposes.
