Six months in County jail is how long a Byron teen will serve for crashing a golf cart and killing her passenger. 19-year old Courtney Greene was sentenced in Genesee County court Thursday.
She pled guilty back in June to criminally negligent homicide and driving while her ability was impaired. Greene was driving a golf cart around midnight last November on the Byron-Holly Road when it was rear ended by a car and her boyfriend 18-year-old Zachary Rusin was thrown from the golf cart and died the next day.
In a court room packed to the brim with supporters for Greene, Judge Robert Noonan imposed the sentence of jail time and 5 years probation. Noonan cited the outpouring of support for Greene, saying over 20 letters were submitted to stating what a good person she was and how much she really loved Zack.
Noonan said the overwhelming support and the hope that she will teach young people about the consequences of drinking and driving and making stupid choices in the future was the reason she will not be spending time in State prison.
A tearful Greene was carted off to jail immediately after Thursday’s hearing, she was also ordered to pay over $1,160 in restitution.
