A two-vehicle accident in Elba closed a portion of Route 98 in the village. The accident happened about 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Initial reports from the scene indicated a six-wheel box truck swerved to avoid hitting a passenger car that was stopped in the intersection. The truck then crashed into the Old Mill Co-op and took out about 6 support beams in the building.
Deputy Jon Szumigala is with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. He said the driver of the truck was lucky to be alive, as one beams almost pierced through the cab of the truck.
"He was trapped in the truck due to beams and the structure of the building coming down on top of the truck. He had to be extricated by the fire department,” said Szumigala.
The driver of the truck has been taken to UMMC for evaluation, even though no injuries have been reported. His name has not yet been released.
