The State Department of Health is cracking down on the use of bath salts and other synthetic drugs.
Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Buffalo today to announce that a new rules will make it illegal to sell or possess synthetic drugs. The list of prohibited drugs has also been expanded to include substances that are used to make synthetic drugs. Those found in violation of these regulations will face fines of up to $500 and potential jail time.
A new hotline was also introduced for people to call if they have information about the illegal distribution of synthetic drugs. That number is 1-888-99salts or 1-888-997-2587.
Cuomo said bath salts and other synthetic drugs pose a serious threat to public health and safety and he believes these actions will “attack the problem.”
The rule comes after many head shops across Western New York were raided for synthetic drugs, including Batavia's 420 Emporium.
