Starting today, new-design license plates are available to all New Yorkers.
The design is called “Empire Gold.” It’s considered a retro look, with an all-gold background and navy blue lettering.
The design is also slightly updated, with navy blue banners across the top of the plate.
Late last year, the state had intended to mandate the Empire Gold plates for all New Yorkers, as a way to gain revenue.

Genesee County Clerk Don Read explains that’s not the case.

Starting today, new license plates of any sort will cost you $25 a set. The fee had been $15.
The current Empire blue-and-white design plates are still available on a limited basis.
